Caption on back of image reads: "Looking directly south. Initial photo 14 months after a 35-acre fire on Aug. 13, 1947 killed 90% of a shortleaf pine stand 54 years old, thinned in 1946 for pulpwood. Weeds hide the pine seedlings 1-foot tall resulting from good seed crop in the fall of 1947."
