Abstract
Karl Gutzlaff’s successes in the mission field of China are useful for missionaries to learn about due to how he transformed missional methodology by assimilating into Chinese culture and becoming fluent in Chinese, but so are his failures. His failures, like becoming involved with the illegal opium trade, help missionaries to avoid certain pitfalls they might face in the mission field and learn from Gutzlaff’s mistakes.
