Abstract

The Arkansas Gazette's "Chronicles of Arkansas" articles were written by historian Margaret Smith Ross. The column began in the 1950s and concluded in 1968. Its most significant contribution to the knowledge of Arkansas history came when the series began to focus exclusively on the Civil War, starting January 1, 1961. Taken as a whole, the articles offer readers a day-by-day account of the Civil War in Arkansas, from 1861 through 1865. The column, as described by the newspaper, was to "show not only the importance of Arkansas in the Civil War, but also the importance of the war to Arkansas." Articles included more than simply a description of military and political events, reaching into practically every aspect of life in Arkansas during the war years.

This collection of the Arkansas Gazette's "Chronicles of Arkansas" includes articles from 1958 to the column's final publication in 1968.
